Tree lined street in an Australian property development

Choosing the right trees for a property development can be difficult, with many factors to consider.

Luckily though, we’ve done the hard work for you and have put together a selection of the best trees for a housing property development that will withstand and thrive in the sometimes harsh Australian climate.

Tree Choice

The choice of a tree can be based on the development itself and whether it is in an eco-estate or simply a choice of species that are native to the particular area the housing estate is located in.

There is certainly no one size fits all process, so you should do your research to ensure the trees you plant are suitable for not just the launch of the development but will also stand the test of time.

If you’re a developer looking to select the best trees for your housing estate that will withstand the Aussie sun, here are some great options:

A) Eucalyptus

An obvious choice of tree for the Australian climate would be the eucalyptus.

Many eucalypts that are ideal for your home garden with beautiful flowers, foliage, fruit and bark. The Angophora hispida (Dwarf Apple) would be an ideal choice.

Reigning from the Hawkesbury region of New South Wales this species of tree may grow into a multi-trunked mallee, or as a single-trunked small tree.

It will grow from 4 to 6 metres tall with attractive flaky bark.

B) Pacific Sunset

If you are looking for a taller tree then the Acer warrenred ‘Pacific Sunset’ may be a better choice.

This is a beautiful, fast growing and well structured small to medium maple, ideal for planting in the street, residential and urban areas.

It has excellent resistance to heat and performs well in harsh conditions.

It grows 10 metres in height and has moderate growth rate with green-yellow flowers that come out in late spring.

C) Cimmaron Ash

Last but certainly not least, the Fraxinus pennsylvanica or ‘Cimmaron Ash’ is a striking feature tree which provides great summer shade and is capable of withstanding relatively extreme climatic conditions, being tolerant of frost as well as drought.

Attractive dark green foliage is lighter on the underside and transitions through an array of colours starting with yellows, fiery reds and rich burgundy as the weather cools in autumn.

The leaves hold onto the tree longer into winter than other varieties of this species.

It is suitable for a wide variety of both residential and commercial projects and has a moderate growth rate adapting to most soil types and conditions.
